The viability of greenhouse farms in Delta is being threatened by the NDP’s new Employer’s Health Tax.
West Coast Vegetables in Ladner—which never paid MSP previously— says the NDP’s new tax will cost nearly $100,000 per year, and will keep escalating as wages go up.
In Question Period, Delta South MLA Ian Paton invited Agriculture Minister Lana Popham to come to Delta to explain this new tax grab to the company, but she refused to acknowledge his request. Finance Minister Carole James responded instead— dismissing the company’s concerns and indicating its operators don’t understand how taxation works.
Paton also asked whether the Agriculture Minister has done an assessment of the impacts this tax will have on farmers and agricultural jobs, but she did not respond to that question either.
